The Spring Cleaning of Learning English!

The term spring cleaning means literally to clean in the spring season. I would suggest you spring clean your study of English as well, or least evaluate how well you are learning English. If you are not making any progress on learning English, then I would recommend you make changes to your study habits. For example, if you study English by books and tapes and you are not making good progress, then maybe it is time to get together with some who can help you one to one. If you are not making progress, by studying in an language exchange setting, then maybe it is time to make some changes.

I have said it before and I will say it again, motivation plays a huge roll in learning English. In my e-book, “5 Easy Steps to Learn English on Your Own,” I relate a story about a man who I met online. He learned English and was fluent in about 6 months. He did primarily self study course and 1:1 classes. His motivation was he wanted to learn English, so he could understand what people were saying before they had sex in the pornography films he was watching.

The trouble with learning anything is that it requires both the student AND teacher to do well. The teacher needs to make a good lesson plan. The students need to supply the motivation to learn and put forth effort.

I think it is important to also get along with your teacher. In school, for the most part you can’t choose your teachers. When it come to private language academies, you can choose your teacher and it should be one you can do well with. I have turned away students after our first meeting because I don’t think I can teach them well. There was something about our personalities clashing or something just didn’t click between us. I have come to realize two things, I can’t teach every student, and every student can not learn from me.  It doesn’t make me a bad teacher and it doesn’t make them a bad student. It just means it meant we were not meant to be together.

I believe every student can learn given the right circumstances. You need to know how you learn best.

Step 1- Watch and Listen

Picture of TV The first thing you can to learn English on your own is to Watch and Listen

Watch TV or a DVD. You also listen to the Radio, or listen to a song everyday.

The first thing you can do is to watch T.V. or a D.V.D. in full English. If you can activate the closed caption (CC) feature on your TV or use subtitles in English, then do it. You can listen and follow by reading the words!

Even if you do not completely understand what is being said, you will learn to listen to English with its sounds. Do not watch a program with subtitles in your language. It will not help you. If that is all you have, then at least tape a piece of paper to the bottom of the TV screen so you can’t see the subtitles.

Watch a move in your native language with English subtitles but turn the volume to zero or mute. Again it will be better to watch an English only movie. Do not watch the same movie over and over again, trying to memorize it. Watch a variety of movies.

Many countries have the American Forces Network T.V. and Radio (AFN). Click here to see if an A.F.N. radio or T.V. station is in your country. You can also go to the USA major networks via the internet and watch your favorite T.V. shows for free.

American Broadcasting Company (ABC) Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS)
National Broadcasting Company(NBC) Fox Entertainment Group, Inc. (FOX)

If you are into music, songs can be a great source for learning English as well. However, with songs, I would recommend the following:

  • Do not listen to only one song and memorize it.
  • Try to listen to a variety of songs.
  • Try to get the lyrics to read or sing along with the music.

It would be best to have the music, words, and hear someone singing the song.
Take care and realize that best grammar is not in the songs. That is just a part of music.
YouTube is an excellent FREE source to find music and words together:
Here are examples of songs I found for students recently: Time in a Bottle and
Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around The Old Oak Tree .

Keep working hard. Learning another language is not easy but you can do it. Commit to learn everyday will give you the quickest results.

Questions and comments are always welcome.

All the best,
Nicolas Cramer

Can you memorize this?
How long does it take you to memorize this?

Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November
All the rest have thirty-one,
except for leap year at which time, February has twenty-nine
